Blood Flow Restriction Training

Blood flow restriction (BFR) rehabilitation training is an innovative injury recovery therapy that is producing significant increases in strength with low intensity exercises. BFR training is essentially a strategy that involves the use of FDA approved pressure cuffs placed around a limb during exercise. The aim of this is to safely restrict venous blood flow from a working muscle while allowing arterial blood flow, which is usually done with low-intensity resistance training. Research has shown that BFR training results in:

  • Diminished atrophy and loss of strength from disuse and non-weight bearing after injuries

  • Increased strength with sub maximal weight training

  • Improved muscle endurance in 1/3 the time

  • Improved muscle protein synthesis in the elderly

  • Improved strength and hypertrophy after surgery
